Elected mayors: powers for leaders in big cities

Elected mayors for larger English cities are seen as one way to devolve power from Westminster, although plans for city mayors were largely rejected in a series of referendums in 2012.

But George Osborne and council leaders in the Greater Manchester region are behind a bigger plan for a figurehead to cover an enlarged area with more powers.

In a Daily Politics film, Giles Dilnot looked at the hunger for the office with Tom Gash from the Institute for Government, and Baroness Jones, the 2012 Green candidate in the London mayoral contest.
