In pictures: Penguins rock back to the zoo

Penguins Rock, the revamped outdoor penguin pool at Edinburgh Zoo, is to reopen to the public on Thursday

The zoo's penguins have been reintroduced to the pool over the past few weeks and have started to use the new facilities, such as the diving board

Edinburgh Zoo retained 29 gentoo penguins which had been staying in Belfast and Denmark while the enclosure was shut

The new enclosure has mock sandy beaches and rocky areas

The pool contains about 1.2 million litres of water, about half as much as an Olympic size swimming pool

Lowered sightlines, glass barriers and wood perimeters should make it a better viewing experience, the zoo says. All pictures taken by Ivon Bartholomew
