Edinburgh schools' problems could affect other buildings

A leading architect has said that the structural fault identified in several Edinburgh schools could be present in other public buildings constructed under similar PPP contracts.

Malcolm Fraser told BBC Good Morning Scotland's Gillian Marles that he raised concerns over public finance initiatives in 2007.

Mr Fraser also said it would be difficult to detect the extent of the problem: "You almost need to take a school to bits to find out that these issues are there," he said.

He did not rule out that similar issues could affect other public buildings constructed under similar deals.

Seventeen Edinburgh schools remain closed to allow safety checks to be carried out after concerns were raised over structural issues first identified when a wall collapsed at Oxgangs Primary School.
