A 26-year-old man has been arrested and charged with road traffic offences after a car crashed into a block of flats in Paisley.

Residents of the Hamilton Court tower block in the Calside area said it "shook" after the car smashed into it on Thursday night.

The impact left a large hole in the wall, with the car coming to a halt in the building's laundrette.

Two men were taken to the nearby Royal Alexandra Hospital for treatment.

No-one else was injured in the crash, which happened at about 22:45.

Ian Bryson, who lives on the eighth floor of the building, told BBC Scotland that the impact had been "like a bomb" and that the building had been shaking.

He said he did not know how the occupants of the car had survived the crash, adding: "I thought somebody had been killed because my neighbour was out screaming.

"I thought somebody was trapped in the car, maybe another passenger. So that's how we came down, to see if we could maybe help.

"The laundrette is open 24/7. Anyone could have been in there."

Phil McNally, a resident on the 14th floor, added: "It sounded like an explosion - how they got out I don't know. It's terrible."

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesman said: "Operations Control mobilised five appliances to the scene to assist emergency service partners in making the area safe."
