A controversial section of an Edinburgh cycle path will travel through Roseburn Terrace.

Councillors have given the go ahead for option A despite protest from local business owners who fear less parking in the street will be detrimental to them.

Option B would have diverted cyclists via Roseburn Place and Roseburn Street.

The council's £5.5m cycle superhighway, linking Roseburn to Leith Walk, has already been given the go ahead.

The scheme was approved on 30 August.

The decision to chose option A was taken at a public meeting of the City of Edinburgh Council's Future Transport Working Group.

The public meeting was looking at design details of the cycle path.

Final design

A comprehensive review of option A will be carried out 12 months after it is created following the local concerns that reducing loading bays to make way for bikes would have a huge impact on passing trade, and that reducing traffic lanes could increase congestion at Roseburn.

Lesley Hinds, City of Edinburgh Council's transport convener, said: "I'm pleased that we've now arrived at a final design for this bold and transformational project, which will make it so much easier to cycle and walk into and right through the city centre by linking up with our already well-used QuietRoutes across the north and west of Edinburgh.

"I recognise the concerns of local residents and businesses and I hope we can work with them in the coming months to ensure the project works for them too."

Daisy Narayanan, Sustrans Scotland's acting director, said: "Sustrans Scotland welcomes the decision by the City of Edinburgh Council to support the direct route from Roseburn to Haymarket as part of Edinburgh's city centre west to east link cycle route.

"It has come after an extensive consultation and stakeholder engagement which has been exemplary in terms of tackling a sensitive issue and taking account of both the aspirations and concerns of all communities involved."

Option A includes reducing four lanes of traffic from Roseburn to Haymarket to two, and using half a carriageway and a bus lane for cyclists.
