Man charged with Elaine Doyle murder in Greenock in 1986

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a schoolgirl more than 26 years ago.

Elaine Doyle, 16, died on her way home from a disco in Greenock, Inverclyde, on 1 June, 1986.

Her body was found the next day in a lane off Ardgowan Street, less than 50 yards from her home.

John Docherty, 48, made no plea or declaration during an appearance at Greenock Sheriff Court. He was remanded in custody.

He was arrested following a police operation in Greenock on Friday morning.
