The death of a man after a street disturbance in South Lanarkshire is now being treated as murder.

Stuart McGeachie, 38, was assaulted in Rutherglen's Farmeloan Road on Tuesday evening before making his way to a nearby flat where he died.

Police said they had begun a murder investigation following the results of a post-mortem examination.

Detectives want to speak to a group of youths on bikes or scooters who were in the area on Tuesday.

The inquiry is now being led by Police Scotland's Major Investigation Team.

Mr McGeachie's relatives have been informed of his death, and a report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Det Ch Insp John Morrison said intensive inquiries were under way with officers gathering CCTV footage from the crime area.

"Our thoughts remain with Stuart's family and friends at this very difficult time," he said.

"We have a dedicated team of officers working on this investigation and I would like to reassure the local community that everything is being done to trace those responsible.

"I am appealing to anyone who may have seen a group of youths in dark clothing on bikes or scooters throughout the day on Farmeloan Road and Main Street, to get in touch, external as they may have vital information about the incident.

"I would also ask the group themselves to come forward as they may have seen or heard something which could help with our enquiries," he added.

He described Mr McGeachie's family as "absolutely devastated" by his death and thanked the public for their assistance so far.

"We will have a continued police presence in the area and I would like to thank the local community for their cooperation," he said.
