Heavy snowfalls affecting travel in Highlands

Snow and high winds have disrupted travel for most of this week

Heavy snowfalls, ice and high winds have again affected driving conditions in parts of the Highlands.

Police had warned earlier that the A9 was passable with care between the Slochd and Dalwhinnie.

A jack-knifed lorry blocked the A86 Newtonmore-Laggan earlier and snow has shut the B976 Crathie-Gairnsheil road.

The Met Office has forecast heavy snow on Saturday extending from southern Scotland northwards across the rest of the country.

Forecasters said there was potential for 5-10cm of snow, however, it could accumulate to depths of up to 30cm on higher ground.

The Met Office added that the snow should ease later and will turn to rain.

Five schools in the Highland Council area were affected by the wintry weather.

Dumfries and Galloway Constabulary has also warned of potential snowfalls over the weekend across the region.
