Women encouraged to go for Highland apprenticeships

Young women are being encouraged to apply for apprenticeships with Highland Council.

The local authority has six vacancies in its housing and property building maintenance team.

Resources committee chairwoman Carolyn Wilson said the council was keen to see more applications from women.

The positions are fixed term for four years and offer apprenticeships in plumbing, electrical, joinery, building or painting.

'Economic situation'

Highland Council said filling the posts would help it maintain its total number of apprentices at 24.

Ms Wilson said: "The council is committed to promoting apprenticeships and the energy and enthusiasm of these young people is great to see.

"We would be particularly keen to see more applications from girls this year as these are excellent career opportunities for both sexes."

Steve Barron, director of housing and property, said the council was playing a part in training up a skilled workforce for the region.

He said: "It is particularly important to try and maintain the levels of training despite the current economic situation affecting our local construction sector as this will help to ensure that a skilled workforce is available for the future."
