Meeting to discuss A890 Lochcarron to Kyle road closure

The first landslide on the A890 happened on 22 December

Highland councillors are to meet on Thursday to consider options for dealing with a section of road which has been closed for two weeks following landslides.

More than 100 tonnes of rock came down on the A890 Lochcarron to Kyle road in Wester Ross on 22 December.

There was a further landslide a few days later.

The B9176 at Newbridge in Easter Ross has also been closed by a landslide since Tuesday.

Northern Constabulary said other routes - including the A9 at the Slochd and at Drumochter - have been affected by snow and ice.

In Strath Oykel, Ardgay, the unclassified Bailey Bridge road was expected to remain closed until Thursday due to flooding.

The rockfall on the A890 means driving between Lochcarron and Kyle involves a 140 mile (225km) diversion via Inverness and then the A82 to Invermoriston.

Caithness, Sutherland and Ross MSP Rob Gibson said Highland Council should consider reinstating a ferry at Stromeferry as an alternative to the diversion.
