'Last' surviving kite reintroduced to Highlands thought to have died

RSPB Scotland believes the last of the original red kites introduced to the Highlands from Sweden almost 20 years ago has died.

The RAF was involved in flying the bird, known as Red T, to Scotland in 1993.

The kite was released near Fortrose on the Black Isle as part of a reintroduction programme.

Red T was found dead at the edge of a pine woodland on the Black Isle. His mate was seen circling overhead.

RSPB Scotland believe Red T was the last survivor of kites introduced to the Highlands between 1989 and 1993.

The birds of prey were reintroduced to Scotland after being wiped out through persecution and habitat loss.
