Highland launches Local Authority Mortgage Scheme

Highland Council is the first in Scotland to launch a Local Authority Mortgage Scheme (LAMS).

It will use £1m from its cash reserves to guarantee loans of up to 20% of a mortgage to help first time buyers.

The scheme will help buyers who have difficulties raising the full deposit required by lenders.

Danny Alexander, Lib Dem MP for Inverness, Nairn, Badenoch and Strathspey, has praised Highland Council for launching the scheme.

LAMS is a UK-wide initiative. Thirty-three English local authorities are already running schemes.

Mr Alexander said: "Highland Council are to be congratulated on this positive move to help people get on the housing ladder.

"It will both make homes affordable for families and help the construction sector in the north."

Liberal Democrat group leader on the Highland Council, David Alston, said the authority had made a commitment to help to provide homes in the area.
