Aberdeen's Robert Gordon University has named its new principal as Prof Ferdinand von Prondzynski.

The German-born academic succeeds Prof Mike Pittilo, who passed away suddenly aged 55 in February.

Prof von Prondzynski's appointment comes after spending 10 years as president of Dublin City University.

He said: "I am delighted to be taking up this exciting appointment. RGU has been one of higher education's major success stories."

Dr Melfort Campbell, chairman of RGU's board of governors, said: "The board of the university is delighted to have appointed a new principal and vice-chancellor with an outstanding reputation and record for strategic leadership and success."

Prof Pittilo had joined the university in 2005. He was awarded an MBE last year for his services to health.
