Fundraisers hold Boxing Day winter splash charity event

Dozens of people run into the North Sea annually on Boxing Day

Hundreds of Scots have braved freezing waters across the country to take part in an annual Boxing Day winter splash.

Events were held in Aberdeen and at Prestwick, where about 400 people ran into the Firth of Clyde for the 1400 GMT high tide.

Among those taking part was 81-year-old former paratrooper and boxer Bill McNiss from Kirkintilloch.

In Aberdeen, the annual Nippy Dippers event attracted nearly 200 participants who went for a swim in the North Sea.

The Aberdeen Lions Club Nippy Dipper raised more than £12,000 for local charities, compared to the £10,000 raised last year.

Rebecca Millar, who helped organise this year's event, which took place opposite the Beach Leisure Centre in Aberdeen, said: "There was so many people there this year. It was so much fun but I think, at -5C, it was actually warmer in the water than it was outside."

May Gilchrist, the fundraising manager at cancer charity Clic Sargent who took part in the Prestwick event, said they had raised at least £50,000.
