Colin Montgomerie's mother died of lung cancer in 1991

Golfer and winning Ryder Cup captain Colin Montgomerie has launched a fresh drive to raise £3m to build a new cancer centre in Aberdeen.

Maggie's Cancer Care Centres and the Elizabeth Montgomerie Foundation have teamed up for the project.

The Scottish golfer's mother died of lung cancer in 1991.

The centre at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary would provide a support and advice service, including sessions with a clinical psychologist.

The fundraising target is £3m, to cover the cost of building the centre and running it for two years.

Montgomerie captained Europe to a victory over the United States in last year's Ryder Cup.
