Councillor McCaig will take over from Kevin Stewart as SNP leader

A 26-year-old councillor has taken over as leader of the SNP group on Aberdeen City Council.

Callum McCaig will lead the SNP group, which runs the council in coalition with the Liberal Democrats.

The SNP has recently become the largest party in the city after a by-election, with 14 councillors compared with 13 Liberal Democrats.

The current leader of the local authority is Liberal Democrat John Stewart.

A by-election to determine who will serve on the council following the jailing of Garthdee, Airyhall and Broomhill councillor Scott Cassie is also due to be held.

Mr McCaig replaces fellow SNP councillor Kevin Stewart as group leader.

Mr Stewart stood down after being elected as the MSP for Aberdeen Central earlier this month.

Councillor McCaig, who is currently deputy leader of the council, said: "I am extremely proud to be chosen by my colleagues to lead the group.

"The past few weeks have been fantastic for the SNP both in Aberdeen and nationally. I look forward to taking the group forward and embracing the challenges that face Aberdeen City Council over the coming months."
