Pledge to 'fight all the way' for Moray RAF future

The future of RAF Lossiemouth is expected to be known by July

Campaigners supporting Moray's two RAF bases and their local communities have pledged to "fight all the way".

A decision on the future of RAF Lossiemouth is expected to be made by 19 July.

The Moray Task Force vowed to pursue every avenue to save the base, and get a fair deal for the Forres community facing the closure of RAF Kinloss.

Both RAF Lossiemouth and RAF Leuchars in Fife are waiting to learn their fate.

George McIntyre, joint chair of the Moray Task Force, said: "The resilience and determination of the people of Moray is remarkable.

"If we get a decision on 19 July it will be almost nine months to the day since the prime minister issued a hammer blow for RAF Kinloss and revealed that the future of RAF Lossiemouth was not secure.

"Throughout that time our communities have stood shoulder to shoulder.

"It is unthinkable for our community that we could be dealt a double blow of the magnitude that the additional closure of RAF Lossiemouth would bring."

The three operational squadrons at Kinloss are being disbanded in the wake of the decision to cut the Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft and close the base.
