Prison officers wearing protective body armour were needed to break-up trouble at the new HMP Grampian in Peterhead.

The Scottish Prison Service (SPS) said the incident involved a small number of inmates on Tuesday. No-one was injured.

A spokeswoman said it would be inaccurate to say there had been weekly incidents at HMP Grampian since it opened.

HMP Grampian opened in early March, replacing the town's old jail, as well as Craiginches prison in Aberdeen.

Andy Hogg, assistant general secretary of the Prison Officers Association Scotland, told BBC Scotland: "I have to say it's not entirely unusual when there's a new establishment.

"It's more to do with the prisoners and staff settling in."
