Police Scotland have praised travelling Aberdeen football fans after outbreaks of violence before the team's Europa League match in Holland.

Eight people were arrested ahead of the Pittodrie club's 2-1 win over FC Groningen on Thursday.

Fighting is believed to have taken place in the Oosterstraat area of Groningen at around 18:30.

Chief Supt Adrian Watson said: "The overwhelming majority of travelling fans behaved in an exemplary fashion."

He added: "One or two perhaps let themselves down. Overall it was a very positive experience in Groningen.

Chief Supt Watson said some of the home support "caused a few challenges" and this will be investigated by the Dutch police.

He said: "There were a total of eight arrests for disorder and lower level offences.

"Police Scotland will continue to work positively with our counterparts in the Netherlands."
