Aberdeen's iconic Marcliffe Hotel is to stay open after a surprise U-turn by its owner.

The five-star hotel - a popular venue for wedding receptions and functions - has been at its North Deeside Road venue since 1993.

Owner Stewart Spence had said in 2013 he was going to retire. News of the change of heart at the weekend was welcomed on social media.

Housebuilder Stewart Milne was set to demolish the hotel.

Mr Spence said he now had no plans to sell up in the future.

The Stewart Milne Group said it had no comment to make on the breakdown of the planned deal.
