Almost 30 workers were airlifted from a North Sea oil platform after a power failure.

A total of 29 "non-essential" crew left Shell's Brent Charlie installation on Thursday.

Brent Charlie is 116 miles (187km) north east of Lerwick in Shetland.

A Shell spokesperson said: "Due to a main power generator outage, we carried out a precautionary down man of 29 non-essential personnel from the Brent Charlie platform."

Shell-contracted helicopters took 10 crew to other Brent installations and 19 to Aberdeen.

Main power has since been restored to the platform through one generator, and work was continuing to bring a secondary generator back in to service.

The platform was expected return to full manning at the next shift change.
