Brian McKandie murder: DNA evidence found in Rothienorman case

DNA evidence has been found at the home of a man who was murdered in Aberdeenshire six months ago, police have said.

Brian McKandie was found beaten to death with a "heavy weapon" in his home in Rothienorman on 12 March.

Police revealed they had found DNA evidence as Mr McKandie's brother made a fresh appeal for information.

William McKandie said: "We have lost our brother and we just want to know what happened and why."

He added: "Somebody must know what happened to Brian and we would ask them to look to their conscience and call the police."

Mass screening

Det Ch Insp Iain Smith said a mass DNA screening could be carried out at some stage.

He said: "This type of crime is very unusual in the north east and has obviously been extremely distressing for Brian's family as well as the wider community.

"Brian's family naturally are anxious to know what has happened and just want answers so they can come to terms with what has happened."

Police believe Mr McKandie may have known his killer.
