Package at Aberdeen Town House poses 'no threat'

Aberdeen's council Town House was evacuated after a suspicious package was discovered.

Police were called to the scene on Broad Street shortly before 16:00 and cordoned off the building, which houses the council chambers.

The package contained a substance which was later found not to be harmful.

Ch Insp David Howieson, of Police Scotland, confirmed there was no threat to the public and emergency services were standing down.

Aberdeen City Council urged members of the public to avoid the area while investigations were carried out.

A council spokesperson said "the health, safety and wellbeing of the public, staff, elected members and all those who use our buildings" was a "priority", which is why the site was evacuated.

Ch Insp Howieson added: "Inquiries will now be carried out into the full circumstances.

"I would like to thank the public for their patience as emergency services responded to this incident."
