Man jailed for dangerous driving crash in Aberdeen

A man who left his former girlfriend badly hurt in a high-speed crash in Aberdeen has been jailed.
George Alden, 36, was found guilty by a jury of causing serious injury to his passenger by driving dangerously while under the influence of alcohol.
The car ended up on its roof in Crown Street in the city centre after colliding with a building in the early hours of 11 October 2022.
At Aberdeen Sheriff Court, Alden was jailed for three-and-a-half years.
He was also banned from driving for five years.
Alden had admitted failing to stop for police, and driving while disqualified and with no insurance.
He was also found guilty of assaulting his former girlfriend on the night of the crash.
Defence solicitor Lisa Reilly said Alden accepted his responsibility, and that he had caused injuries to himself and his passenger, but "thankfully" they had both recovered.
She asked for a non-custodial sentence to be considered.
Sheriff Ian Wallace told Alden he had been convicted of a "very serious" offence.
The sheriff said Alden drove in an "extremely dangerous" manner, leaving the car on its roof with them both inside.
He said his culpability was high, the consequences could have been much worse, and they were "lucky to survive".
"Only a custodial sentence is appropriate," the sheriff said.
Alden was jailed for 42 months and disqualified from driving for five years, after which he will have to resit an extended test.
The sentence was backdated to 20 October 2022 when he was remanded.
A five-year non-harassment order relating to his former partner was also imposed.
