A woman has been left in a critical condition after a crash in Aberdeenshire.

The 34-year-old was a passenger when the car collided on the A96 at the Broomhill roundabout at Kintore at 00:50 on Wednesday.

Police said the driver, a 61-year-old man, was not at the scene when officers arrived but was later traced.

The woman was described as in a critical but stable condition.

Both were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary for treatment.

Part of the A96 was closed for several hours after the crash but later re-opened.

Police Scotland said inquiries were ongoing and called on any witnesses or those with dash-cam footage to contact the non-emergency line., external
