A body has been found in an 18-month search for a woman swept away in flooding in Aberdeenshire.

Hazel Nairn, 71, was last seen at the River Don, near Monymusk, in November 2022 while out with her dog.

Police said the remains of a woman were recovered from the River Don near Kemnay, Inverurie, at about 13:20.

The force said formal identification had still to take place but Mrs Nairn's family had been informed.

A spokesperson added: "The death is currently being treated as unexplained but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances."

A fresh search of the river took place one year after Mrs Nairn was swept away, but found no trace of her.

A specialist underwater team initially searched in October and returned in November last year.

However high water levels made it difficult for them to search the areas identified as priorities.

The body of her dog was found in the days after she went missing.
