NCR maintained its research and development centre in Dundee after closing its manufacturing facility in the city in 2009

Up to 70 jobs could be under threat at technology firm NCR's research and development centre in Dundee.

It is understood staff have been warned about possible job losses from the company's offices in the city's Gourdie Industrial Estate.

The Scottish government said it was working with the company to help those affected.

NCR, which has had a presence in Dundee for nearly 70 years, declined to comment on the details of its plans.

The global company specialises in supplying cash machines and banking technology.

'Major concern'

A Scottish government spokesman said news of job losses would be a major concern for NCR employees and their families.

"The Scottish government is working with the company to help those affected and minimise the impact for Scotland as far as possible," he said.

"This is not a reflection of the skills and experience of the workforce.

"If job losses go ahead, co-ordination of local response teams under the Partnership Action for Continuing Employment (PACE) initiative, to provide tailored help and support, will be put in place."

He added: "We are determined to do everything we can to maintain as many of NCR jobs in Dundee as possible."

A spokesman for NCR said: "We continually assess the business and economic environment in order to align ourselves towards growing opportunities based on the demands of the industries we serve.

"Our policy is to not comment on these details."

In 2009, NCR's Dundee factory closed with the loss of hundreds of jobs but it maintained its research and development facility in the city.

NCR set up in Dundee to make cash registers in 1946 and once employed more than 6,500 people in the city.
