A £30m programme of improvements is being planned over the next five years for housing tenants in the Borders.

Scottish Borders Housing Association said it would bring homes up to government set standards by 2015.

Kitchens will be installed or upgraded in 1,700 houses and heating in 1,400.

Works will also be done to install new bathrooms and windows along with an 18-month improvement programme for rural houses, energy efficiency measures and an overhaul of former sheltered homes.
