Royal Regiment of Scotland in Borders freedom ceremony

The Royal Scots Borderers were one of the battalions being given the freedom of the region

The Royal Regiment of Scotland has been given the freedom of the Scottish Borders in a special ceremony.

The soldiers, who have been serving in Afghanistan, were being honoured at the parade, which took place in Gibson Park in Melrose.

They are the first regiment to receive the freedom of the entire region.

The battalions of the Royal Scots Borderers and 52nd Lowland were represented at the event. Both battalions recruit from in the Borders.

The Royal Scots Borderers is the battalion which succeeded the Royal Scots and the Kings Own Scottish Borderers, which came together on 1 August 2006.

The Borderers returned from Afghanistan in two stages last year and marched through Peebles in April and Galashiels in October.
