Crocketford bank scam caller steals £20,000

A woman has been conned out of nearly £20,000 by a caller pretending to be from the Royal Bank of Scotland.

The incident happened in the village of Crocketford in Dumfries and Galloway on Monday evening.

The woman took a phone call from someone claiming to be from the bank, telling her an attempt had been made to withdraw £5,000 from her account.

She declined to give out her details but was then duped into making a call and giving out her information.

"It now transpires that nearly £20,000 has been taken from her account by fraudulent means," said a police spokesman.

"It seems that the original caller to the woman did not hang up the phone after the call and so was able to pretend to be from the bank when the woman made the call to the bank."
