A campaign has been launched to promote the former ferry terminal in Stranraer as a major development opportunity.

The East Pier site has been vacant since Stena Line moved its Irish Sea operation to a new £200m facility at nearby Cairnryan.

The company and Dumfries and Galloway Council have been working on a joint marketing strategy with a view to attracting a private developer.

It is hoped the area could be put to commercial, retail and residential use.

The bulk of the site belongs to the ferry firm but a portion of local authority land is also up for sale.

They have said the area could be put to a number of uses.

Among them is the potential for a casino licence in the area, and the development of the wider waterfront, including the expansion of the current marina, a new breakwater, slipway and boat yard.

Local councillors and Stena Line representatives officially launched the marketing campaign in Stranraer.
