Peebles Rovers tribute to marine Alec Lucas

The main stand at Peebles Rovers ground is to be renamed in honour of Alec Lucas

Peebles Rovers are to rename the main stand of their ground after a former player killed while serving with the Royal Marines in Afghanistan.

Alec Lucas died in November 2008 following an explosion while on patrol in Helmand province.

The 24-year-old was a talented footballer and played for several local teams, including the Peebles side.

Since his death his family and friends have organised a fundraising football tournament in his honour.

Ahead of this year's tournament, an unveiling ceremony will take place on 31 May at the newly-named Alexander Lucas Stand.

A large commemorative plaque has been designed and crafted for inside the stand with a smaller plaque to be positioned on the exterior of the building.

Since the Alec Lucas Memorial Trust was formed in the months after his death it has raised close to £90,000 for marines' charities as well as the support and promotion of local grassroots football.
