Dock Park in Dumfries selected as best in Scotland

A Dumfries park which recently underwent a £2m overhaul has been voted the best in Scotland.

Keep Scotland Beautiful has revealed the results of the poll to identify the nation's favourite open spaces.

The Dock Park was the national winner in the People's Choice award ahead of Beechwood Park in Stirling and Rouken Glen in East Renfrewshire.

A total of 59 Green Flag Award winning parks and green spaces were entered into this year's Scottish vote.

Keep Scotland Beautiful chief executive Derek Robertson said: "Our warm congratulations go out to the top three Scottish parks as voted for by the public.

"We all know how important all green spaces are, and it is great to see the success of our best parks being recognised nationally."

He said the record number of Green Flag Award parks in Scotland showed "genuine improvement" and congratulated those involved in their upkeep.

"Locals tell us time and again how valued these areas are for recreation, and in celebrating this Scottish success story, we look for continued improvement next year," he added.

Stirling Council environment convener Danny Gibson said he was "absolutely thrilled" that Beechwood Park had landed second place in the competition.

The Stirling park has also benefited from a number of improvements recently, including new play equipment, cycle tracks and tree planting.
