Development plans for Dock Park in Dumfries outlined

Proposals to help redevelop the Dock Park in Dumfries have been unveiled

Plans to redevelop a "flagship" park in the south of Scotland have been outlined to councillors.

Consultation and designs for the Dock Park in Dumfries have been progressing for the past six years.

The proposals include a major events space for 7,500 people, recreation and play areas, as well as retention of many historic features.

A bid for Heritage Lottery Funding is due to be submitted in August, with a decision expected later this year.

If successful, it would see more than £1m spent on the site and work on the proposals could get under way early in 2012.

The vision of how the park could be developed was presented to a meeting of the local Nithsdale Area Committee.

Items such as the bandstand, cast-iron benches, bowling, putting, crazy golf and trampolines are set to be retained.

However, tennis courts in the area would be removed.

As well as the major events area capable of coping with large crowds there would also be a smaller community event area with a capacity of a little more than 1,000.

A new frontage to the park is also planned in order to provide a more attractive entrance to the site.
