Dumfries and Galloway Council says child care effort is relentless

A council has vowed to be "absolutely relentless" in improving the care and protection of vulnerable children despite significant progress.

In 2014, inspectors said they were "not confident" young people in Dumfries and Galloway were being kept safe.

However, a follow-up review found a "change in culture" at the local authority.

Director for children and young people Colin Grant said it was vital they continued to deliver further progress.

"I think the key there is not to be complacent, that is the critical issue," he said.

"We have got a very strong focus on improving outcomes for young people, a very strong focus on keeping young people safer.

"We have had good external verification of the progress we have made through the Care Inspectorate and from hearing from practitioners and families."

Mr Grant said that despite those positive steps they needed to keep working on the issue.

"We need to be absolutely relentless in delivering all the actions that we agreed to and in keeping the plan under review," he said.

"It is a complex world, we will never solve every problem and we need to keep working hard."
