Real-time traffic updates launched for drivers on A9

The traffic updates will be displayed on 11 variable message signs along the A9

Drivers using one of Scotland busiest roads are to get up-to-the-minute traffic information.

The Journey Time System has been installed on a 140 mile stretch of the A9.

The system uses detectors to monitor traffic and then calculate journey times between intervals along the road between Stirling and Inverness.

Live updates are then sent to 11 variable message signs on the A9 using GPRS communications.

Drivers can also access the updates by going to the Traffic Scotland website, allowing them to prepare travel plans in advance.

Improved safety

The total cost of installing the new technology was £116,000.

Chairman of the A9 Safety Group, and Head of Network Operations at Transport Scotland, Hugh Gillies said: "We are determined to see continuing improvement in road safety across Scotland's roads and for A9 motorists to benefit as soon as possible.

"The information system, which is currently in operation along key central belt routes, will give drivers along the A9 between Stirling and Inverness, over 140 miles, more accurate information on the expected journey times to their destination.

"With this information drivers can better plan their journeys and make safer driving choices while on the move."
