Some of the most badly behaved school pupils in the UK are set to have a street named in their honour.

Dundee City Council is considering plans to create a Bash Street in the city's west end during 2013.

The proposal was put forward by Beano publishers DC Thomson, which is based in the city.

The Bash Street Kids have featured in the comic since 1954, when they first appeared in a strip called When the Bell Rings.

The proposal to name a street in their honour, as well as creating a Beano-themed play centre, has been devised as part of the Beano's 75th anniversary next year.

Plans showing a street map of Dundee containing the new Bash Street have been lodged with the local authority.

Request confirmed

A council spokesman confirmed: "Dundee City Council has received a request from DC Thomson to allocate the name Bash Street to the street adjacent to 142/144 West Marketgait, which currently has no name.

"This is to tie-in with the proposed new build and to celebrate the 75th anniversary of The Beano in 2013 in the comic's hometown.

"There is a proposal for a children's soft play area within the former works buildings off West Marketgait."

The local authority has asked local councillor Fraser Macpherson to consider the plan and return his views on it before Friday 16 November.

"Superb proposal"

If the proposal gets the go-ahead, the new name will be considered by the council before the end of the year.

Mr Macpherson said: "I have responded saying I think this is a superb proposal. Dundee having its very own Bash Street seems very appropriate and I'm very pleased that Bash Street will be in the West End Ward".

Dundee already has memorials to DC Thomson's comic characters

A DC Thomson spokesman said: "We're discussing with Dundee City Council the idea of naming a new street Bash Street.

"This is to tie-in with a proposed children's soft play area within the former works buildings off West Marketgait. We think it's a fun idea."

Good ties

City development convener Will Dawson said: "I think it's braw. Historically Dundee has such a massive history with DC Thomson and the characters that have been produced.

"We've already got Desperate Dan and Minnie the Minx in the centre and it's good to tie in the Bash Street Kids.

"We've got to make these historic connections. There's another plan to put Glebe Street back on the map. It used to exist in the city and it ties in with the Broons too."

The Beano was created in 1938 and the unruly pupils and world-weary staff of Bash Street School made their first appearance in the comic in 1954.

The characters of Class 2B were reputedly inspired by the pupils of the High School of Dundee, who could be seen by the comic-strip artists at neighbouring DC Thomson's former HQ in Meadowside.
