Plans announced for 114 new homes in Dundee

A deal has been signed to develop 99 flats at the Wallace Craigie Works in Dundee

Plans for more than 100 new affordable homes to be built in Dundee have been announced by the Scottish government.

Contracts have been signed with two developers, James Keiller Estates and Ferrier Holdings, for the development of 114 flats.

Work will begin this spring with completion expected in the autumn of next year.

The properties are being constructed as part of the National Housing Trust initiative (NHT).

The announcement was made by Housing and Welfare Minister Margaret Burgess on Tuesday.

Economic stimulus

The flats will be built at two sites; 99 properties will be developed at the Wallace Craigie Works site in Dundee and 15 flats will be built at Broughty Ferry.

Mrs Burgess said: "It is my belief that everyone should live in a comfortable home which doesn't cost the earth to keep. A vibrant, expanding housing sector can stimulate economic growth by protecting and creating jobs and supporting regeneration.

"The innovative National Housing Trust initiative is already delivering hundreds of much-needed homes across Scotland.

"This deal will deliver over 100 new homes for the people of Dundee, secured for very little taxpayers' money."

Jimmy Black, convener of Dundee City Council's housing committee, said: "I welcome any initiative that brings a greater choice of rented housing to the market for people who currently might not want to be owner occupiers.

"Some of them might currently be occupying council houses but would jump at the chance of getting a quality energy efficient house at a mid-market rent."
