Inspectors praise cleanliness at Ninewells Hospital

Health inspectors have praised a series of improvements in cleanliness and hygiene at Dundee's Ninewells Hospital.

During an unannounced visit in January, the Healthcare Environment Inspectorate (HEI) found the environment and equipment to be "generally clean".

It followed a visit in 2014 when problems with hand washing and breast milk storage procedures were highlighted.

The HEI said the latest inspection marked a "significant improvement".

In 2014, NHS Tayside was required to make nine improvements, including to the cleaning of equipment and departments.

Following the most recent report, they have been asked to improve use of guidance for personal protective equipment.

The health board's chief executive, Lesley McLay, said: "Our frontline staff work hard every day to ensure person-centred, safe and effective care for all our patients and their families and the improvements are down to the commitment of our staff.

"We will not, however, become complacent as we know it is essential that we keep striving to improve on what we do every day to ensure we get that care right for every patient every single time."
