The Principality Building Society is to open nine new branches across Wales.

It is taking over agency offices, previously owned by the Halifax bank.

The society said it was committed to "continually invest in the high streets of Wales", and now has 65 offices, 64 of them in Wales.

The society said it had decided to get closer to communities and the openings later this year would enable it to "bridge the gaps" in its branch network.

The new offices will be in Bargoed, Newcastle Emlyn, Abertillery, Ystradgynlais, Treharris, Ross-on-Wye, Talbot Green, Caernarfon and Colwyn Bay.

Graeme Yorston, Principality's chief operating officer, said: "Whilst a number of financial institutions have opted to cut costs by withdrawing from local high streets, we have decided that now is the time to invest in our retail network to get closer to our communities and engage with customers on a personal level."

He added that it was a "fitting way" to mark the society's 150th anniversary and showed its "unwavering support" for the Welsh economy and "ongoing commitment to the people of Wales."
