Language commissioner takes over as Welsh Language Board comes to an end

The first Welsh language commissioner has officially started in the post.

Meri Huws stepped down early from her role as chair of the Welsh Language Board - a body which has now come to an end - to enable her to take the role.

One of her principal roles will be to promote and aid the use of Welsh.

The post was established by legislation passed last year which obliges public bodies and some private companies, such as utilities firms, to provide services in Welsh.

The Welsh Language Board disappeared at the end of March and some of its duties will be transferred to the new role of Welsh language commissioner, appointed by the Welsh government.

The post was established by legislation passed last year which obliges public bodies and some private companies, such as utilities firms, to provide services in Welsh.

The legislation replaced the 1993 Welsh Language Act that created the board.
