Flood warnings as more heavy rain is expected

Two flood warnings and a dozen alerts remain in place across Wales on Sunday, with heavy rain expected to continue overnight and into Monday.

There have been no reports of flood damage on Sunday, although some roads have been affected.

But Environment Agency Wales (EAW) predicts the number of flood warnings could rise with more rain due and river levels already high.

North Wales is expected to be first hit later before the rain spreads further.

Ceri Davies, EAW strategy unit manager, told BBC Wales: "We have had rain constantly since 19 December.

"Obviously, the ground is very saturated.

"We are anticipating more flood alerts and warnings to come into force."

The flood warnings are in place along the lower Dee Valley from Llangollen in Denbighshire to Chester and at Tenby in Pembrokeshire along the River Ritec.

EAW is providing updates every 15 minutes on its website regarding the flooding.

On Saturday, fire crews in mid and west Wales were called to deal with flooding at properties at Milford Haven, Aberporth and Caldey Island, off Tenby.

In Carmarthenshire, two canoeists were found safe after they overturned in a fast-flowing River Towy at Rhandirmwyn, near Aberdovey.

Roads were affected in Machynlleth, Powys, and Abergavenny, Monmouthshire, on Sunday, according to Traffic Wales.

Last weekend, heavy rain caused landslips of thousands of tonnes of rock, soil and trees in Ystalyfera, in the upper Swansea valley.

Families will not be able to return until after the new year.

Four homes were evacuated in Pontypridd after a landslide caused a wall to collapse.

And a stranded motorist had to be rescued after her car went into a swollen ford in Llancarfan in the Vale of Glamorgan.
