Driving conditions in parts of Gwynedd are treacherous

Driving conditions in parts of north Wales remain treacherous after heavy snow moved up from the south.

Gwynedd and Anglesey were badly affected, with fresh flurries turning to "blizzard conditions" on parts of the A55 in Conwy.

The A487 Caernarfon to Porthmadog has re-opened, after a lorry accident closed it for several hours.

The snow also forced hundreds of schools to close across the region, with many bus services suspended.

North Wales Police have urged motorists to "drive with extreme care" on stretches of the A55 dual carriageway. Fresh snow and blizzard conditions near Penmaenmawr reduced the road to one lane only.

On Anglesey, the A55 only passable with care around Holyhead. An earlier incident involving two jack-knifed lorries at junction six westbound on the island has now been cleared.

Gwynedd council said road conditions south of Caernarfon and towards the Llyn peninsula are "difficult".

The A499 is now passable with care between the Llanwnda and Llanaelhaearn, after being closed for much of Friday afternoon.

An earlier seven-vehicle accident at Llandygai near Bangor closed the A4244 for a time, but the route has now reopened.

The B4391 between Ffestiniog and Arenig, and the B4417 at Llithfaen in Gwynedd are also closed, as is the A4212 at Trawsfynydd has also been shut by snow.

The road between Cerrigydrudion and Denbigh, near Llyn Brenig in Conwy, was reported to be treacherous with snowdrifts building.

Llanarmon Dyffryn Ceiriog near the Wrexham/Powys border had around four inches (10cm) of snow on the ground on Friday morning.

Public transport hit

Bus services across the region have also been affected. Padarn Buses, which serves areas around Caernarfon and Bangor, said it had suspended all its services.

GHA Coaches, which runs a number of services in Denbighshire, Wrexham and Flintshire, suspended its evening operations from 18:00 GMT, and was also expecting other services to finish early as the snow continues.

On the railway, Arriva Trains Wales said there are delays at "multiple locations", although the company said it is trying to run services as close to the normal timetable as possible.

Travellers are advised to look at the journey check website before setting out.

"All lines are now open, but services may still be subject to short notice delay," said an Arriva spokesperson.

"Due to issues on the roads, we expect our services to be very busy, so we are asking people to travel only if absolutely necessary."
