Rhun ap Iorwerth stepped down from his BBC role after announcing his by-election intentions

Rhun ap Iorwerth has been selected by Plaid Cymru to be its candidate in the Welsh assembly by-election on Anglesey.

The by-election on 1 August is the first to be held for an assembly seat for seven years.

It was prompted by former Plaid Cymru leader Ieuan Wyn Jones's decision to stand down.

Mr ap Iorwerth, a former BBC Wales presenter, will contest the seat as Mr Jones is leaving the assembly to lead the new Menai Science Park.

Labour will hold its selection meeting on Saturday and other parties are expected to announce their candidates shortly.
