A man accused of carelessly driving a car which ploughed into a lollipop lady and five pupils outside a school will go on trial in May.

Robert Bell, 61, from Rhoose, Vale of Glamorgan, allegedly lost control of his car near the gates of Rhws Junior School last June.

Karin Williams used her body as a human shield to protect the children.

Mr Bell denies driving without due care and attention, saying he became unwell while at the wheel of the vehicle.

Following the crash on 20 June last year, lollipop lady Karin Williams was hailed as a heroine after jumping in front of the car.

The 50-year-old was later given a Pride of Britain Award in front of millions of TV viewers for her bravery. She sustained a catalogue of injuries, including broken legs, elbow, shoulder and ribs.

Mr Bell appeared before Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Monday where he spoke only to confirm his name, age and address.

District Judge Bodfan Jenkins said he expected Mr Bell's trial to last three days.

About 12 witnesses are expected to be called, including Mrs Williams.

Mr Bell was released on bail to return to the magistrates' court for his trial on 14 May.
