Queen's Baton Relay: Alex Jones among Welsh runners

Alex Jones, Iwan Thomas and Wynne Evans will all carry the baton around parts of Wales

The One Show's Alex Jones, Olympic athlete Iwan Thomas and tenor and Radio Wales presenter Wynne Evans are among the baton bearers for the Wales leg of the of the Commonwealth Games build up.

The Queen's Baton Relay is the curtain-raiser to the Glasgow games in July.

They will be joined 16 other men and women in the relay around Wales.

The Welsh leg of the relay starts on 24 May and bosses of the games are urging people to get behind Team Wales to welcome it.

The relay in Wales will start when the baton touches down at Cardiff Airport. It will spend seven days travelling across the country before reaching Llandegla in north Wales on Friday 30 May.

This is the second batch of baton bearers to be revealed, and they join athletes including Paralympic champion Aled Davies and Commonwealth gold medal winners Kirsty Wade and Michaela Breeze in the relay.

Also among the latest announcement of baton bearers for the relay are former international rugby player Non Evans and Howard Winstone, son of the World Champion boxer of the same name from Merthyr Tydfil.

In north Wales, Llanberis marathon runner Alun Vaughan and Craig Jones, a detective sergeant, will be among those carrying the baton through communities.

Chief executive officer of the Commonwealth Games Council for Wales (CGCW) Chris Jenkins said: "The countdown to the baton touching down in Wales has now reached the 30-day mark, all the plans are in place and we now want to ensure that as many people in Wales as possible get to experience the relay as it makes its way across the country."

He asked people to start making their plans for where and when they will go out to support the relay by visiting the baton website.

"Local authorities and other partners, such as the Urdd, have worked hard to ensure that the baton will get a very warm welcome as it reaches their areas, with events from poetry readings at Dylan Thomas' boathouse in Laugharne to a multi-sport event in Ebbw Vale and the Urdd Eisteddfod in Bala - there will be plenty of opportunities you really don't want to miss," he added.

The relay was launched by the Queen, in her role as head of the Commonwealth, at Buckingham Palace last year.

The first Queen's Baton Relay took place before the Cardiff games in 1958.

The Commonwealth Games begin in Glasgow on 23 July.
