Hinterland heads 2014 Bafta Cymru film and TV nominations

Crime drama Hinterland leads the list of nominations for the 2014 Bafta Cymru awards for Welsh film and television.

The Aberystwyth-based series, Y Gwyll in Welsh, has nine nominations, with five each for Sherlock and murder/mystery 35 Diwrnod (35 Days).

External auditors were invited to oversee the judging process after the wrong name was announced as the winner of the prize for news coverage in 2013.

The winners will be named at the Wales Millennium Centre, Cardiff, in October.

'Outstanding year'

Nominations for Hinterland include best actor for Richard Harrington and best actress for Mali Harries, with director Marc Evans and writer Jeff Murphy.

Historical fantasy drama Da Vinci's Demons is nominated in four categories.

Other nominations include Ruth Jones as best writer for Stella, musician Gruff Rhys's documentary film American Interior, and fly-on-the-wall documentary The Call Centre.

"It's been an outstanding year for television and film talent working in Wales," said director of Bafta Cymru Hannah Raybould.

"Across all 28 categories we've seen an excellent breadth of programmes and individuals represented, in both languages, and from those starting out in their careers to the very experienced."

The awards ceremony will be held in Cardiff Bay on 26 October.

There was controversy in 2013 when it emerged the BBC's Newyddion programme was wrongly named the winner of the award for news coverage when ITV's Wales Tonight had been selected by the judging panel.
