Call for 'fair funding for Wales' made to prime minister

David Cameron has been pushed to deliver "fair funding for Wales" in a House of Commons exchange.

Plaid Cymru's parliamentary leader Elfyn Llwyd used Prime Minister's Questions to also call for "parity of funding with Scotland".

The prime minister said there needed to be a real debate on "a double 'yes'.

"Yes to another referendum on tax raising powers and 'yes' to those powers so the Welsh Assembly takes greater responsibility," he said.

"That is the right pathway."

'Parity of power'

At the weekend the former Plaid leader Lord Wigley said that successive UK governments are responsible for the "deliberate" and "chronic underfunding" of Welsh public services.

He told the Plaid conference Wales needed "parity of power" and "parity of financial resources" with Scotland.

Lord Wigley called the level of funding Wales receives from the UK Treasury a "scandal".

The peer is co-ordinating Plaid's campaign for May's general election.
