Plea for more gay foster carers across Wales

There are calls for more lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people to adopt and foster children in Wales.

Foster Care Associates Cymru has urged more single LGBT people and couples to consider it.

The call comes after a report revealed many LGBT foster carers were concerned how agencies, social workers and foster children might respond to their gender and sexuality.

The campaign coincides with LGBT Adoption and Fostering Week.

An event, organised by the North Wales Adoption Service and Wrexham and Flintshire Fostering Team, was held at the Catrin Finch Centre at Glyndwr University in Wrexham on Tuesday as part of the recruitment push.

About 2% of Foster Care Associates' (FCA) 2,000 carers are LGBT.

FCA chief executive David Oldham said: "Our underlying message is that fostering is open to everyone and it's up to FCA to provide a safe and welcoming community to support and develop our carers from the assessment process through to placement."
