With Twitter and Facebook having a combined audience of nearly 40 million users in the UK, this year's general election is set to be fought on a new battleground.
This digital future is a far cry even from the last election, when most of us kept up-to-date by watching television or listening to the radio.
Politicians have used different techniques to get their message across over the years.
From former England cricketer Ted Dexter signing autographs while out contesting the Cardiff South East seat in 1964, to the Labour-commissioned "Kinnock the Movie" in 1987 and John Major joking with crowds in Brecon in 1997.
